Systematic Theology Course Manual (Part)
The word theology is derived from two Greek words ‘theos’ which means God and ‘logos’ which means word or doctrine.
In a broad sense theology is the entire systematic study of Bible doctrine; doctrine simply means teaching. Specifically, it refers to specific studies into subjects like the nature of God, the nature of the Holy Spirit, and the nature of Jesus Christ.
Why must we study theology?
Why must we begin our studies by looking at theology? It’s important because:
- It helps us to distinguish between the true Gospel and the false gospel.
From African tribal religions to voodoo, there are thousands of false religions that seek to enslave people through lies and deceit. It protects us from the dire consequences of believing in a lie.
“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel- which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.”
- It provides a sure foundation on which our faith rests
Unlike false spiritual groups which depend on the shifting sands of humanism, our faith rests on the unchanging and totally reliable word of God. Studying doctrine helps us to anchor our faith in the eternal word of God instead of the temporary word of man.
“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, all men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever. And this is the word which was preached to you.”
(1 Peter 1:23-25)
- It enables us to effectively promote the Gospel.
Good doctrine helps us to know God. You cannot promote what you don’t know. Good teaching aids us to know our identity in Christ, a key teaching in this center.
Once you know your identity, you can better promote the Gospel and be able to counter and conquer false spiritual movements. More about this vital subject later on.
“But the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits.”
What are the essential truths of orthodox Christianity?
The best way to counter false teaching is to be so familiar with genuine truth that it becomes second nature to us. That way, we’ll know immediately whenever we encounter a counterfeit spiritual movement. So let’s examine the four pillars of truth on which the Christian faith rests:
- The triune nature of God.
There is but one true God, the creator of heaven and earth who has revealed Himself in three persons; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and co-eternal and are to be worshipped as the one and only true God.
- The deity of Jesus Christ.
Jesus is God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary. He came in the flesh as the sinless (and suffering) Son of God. He was crucified on a cross where He died for our sins.
He was buried before being bodily resurrected on the third day. He appeared to many, ascended to the Father’s right hand, and will return again visibly and bodily.
- The deity of the Holy Spirit.
Together with the Father and the Son He is to be proclaimed as the one and only true God for He is indeed God. He shares the essential nature of deity with the rest of the trinity. We’ll get to the specifics of these characteristics later on in this course.
- Salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone.
We like the early church and the church throughout the ages of history, embrace justification by faith in Christ alone. Jesus is the one and only way to the Father.
Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ only; nothing more, nothing less.
These are the core beliefs treasured by the historic and universal church for ages. Any group that rejects any of these basics should be accursed. Sounds pretty strong, hey!
Paul, the great apostle declared in Galatians 1:9, “If any man preach any other gospel unto you than the one you have received, let him be accursed.”
